Do you remember my post about What to do about my Mom?

Well let’s recap. I’m censoring the names of those involved in this story. Let’s call the guy D.Bag and Mom well she’s Mom.

Anyway Mom met D.Bag and had him move in with her. He was supposedly this awesome guy who treated her really good. Anyhoo… D.Bag decides to rough my Mom up a little. I’m not going to go into details because it makes me sick. So Mom kicks D.Bag out.

Yesterday Mom calls me to chat, and tells me that D.Bag had been cutting some trees and apparently he fell and broke his back in 4 places. He is now paralyzed from the neck down. Now D.Bag will no longer be hitting anyone ever again.

Does it make me a bad person for thinking this was his Karma coming back to bite him in the butt? Should I feel bad for him after what he did to my Mom? I don’t know. All I know is I’m glad that he’s out of her life, and I pray that she can learn from her mistakes and change her life. I also pray that he can learn from his mistakes too.

his weeks topic for Small Talk Six at MomDot is “6 ways you are like or unlike your mother”

One way we used to be alike was when I was in High-School we dressed the same. She would borrow my clothes and I would borrow hers. That was until I became taller then her. She’s only 4′11
We both have the same hand writing. You know I used to forge her signature all the time. Bad me!
She only wanted one kid. So I was an only child. Not me… After being that only child I didn’t want that for my kids and wanted to have a big family.
Another way we are unlike is my Mom is the “Woe is me type” I have to constantly remind her that there are good things in life. I guess she always sees the glass as half empty and I always see it as half full.
We look alike also. It’s crazy sometimes I look in the mirror and see her.
We also have the same laugh. I don’t always laugh like her but when I do David loves to point it out to me.

I recently had the chance to try out a bracelet and charm from the new Charm Story line from Things Remembered.

I picked the First Chapter Heart Charm Bracelet. I thought it would be a great starter piece to start my charm collection. I have always wanted a charm bracelet. But I’ve never gotten one no matter how many hints I have given.

I chose to engrave my heart charm with my husbands and I’s initials and then I had them put Forever on the back. Since our relationships was the real first chapter of our family I thought it would be perfect. I plan to order charms for each of the kids with their names and birth dates.

There were so many different charms I really had a hard time deciding what I wanted to put on my first charm bracelet. I think this could be a new Mother’s day tradition. To buy a new charm each year for mom. I know I would love it. My mom would too! She would especially love the photo charms to show off each of her adorable grand kids.

My Charm arrived in only a couple days after I ordered. It came in a little pouch. I had to put it on immediately. My wrists are tiny so it was a little big but I was able to pull it through another link on the chain and it fit perfectly.

The engraving was exactly what I wanted. It’s beautiful. I’ve been wearing it constantly. So if you are looking for a Mother’s Day gift…which is right around the corner.
Check out Things Remembered. I’m a Mom and I love mine.

This is my saltwater aquarium. It is a 90 gallon tank. A couple of weeks ago we added this to our home, after having a much smaller one for over a year.

This is our newest addition, Sunny, a Tang. He is quite beautiful and sociable.

Below is Georgie, our first fish. A clownfish.

This is Toby, the Goby. He stays in this little hole in the rock most of the time.

This is one view. We have greenery, coral and all the little out-growths you see are what naturally come out of the live rock. Live rock means it came directly from the ocean. It is expensive, about $7 per pound, because it has to stay in saltwater en route from the ocean. You never know each day what will have come out of your live rock over night. We have approximately 100 pounds of live rock in this tank. You should have about one pound per gallon of water. The sand is also live sand, which means it was kept in salt water on its way here from the ocean.

It is usually more expensive to have a saltwater aquarium, versus a fresh water aquarium. But the colors of the fish are extremely vivid.

So far in this relatively new tank, I have two Clownfish (Georgie and Porgie), one Tang (Sunny), one Lawnmower Blenny (Benny), one Goby (Toby), and two Dart fish I have not named because I can’t tell them apart.

I find this tank fascinating to watch to evolve on a daily basis.

Benny the Blenny…

Georgie (the clownfish on top) and Porgie (below).

The dartfish and lawnmower blenny.

I will continue to add to this page as I add more fish and coral, etc.

I am an Oklahoma girl who moved to Texas as an adult. I have lived in various parts of the state, but now call my home East Texas. I enjoy gardening, decorating, crafting, spending time with my pets, blogging and keeping up with friends online. I have become somewhat of a saltwater fish aquarium enthusiast this past year. I also have two fish, Spot and Survivor, in the garden pond. I have two Yorkies, named Abigail Rose and Charlie Ross. There are also two cats in the mix; a Maine Coon cat that we found in a dumpster named Clyde. And then there’s Bonnie who hails from a used car lot. I am also a Meals On Wheels volunteer in my community.

Don’t ask me a question if you don’t want an honest answer. Cause I fill that bill quite well. If you ask me what are the top three things that complete my day, I’d say: enjoying the solitude with my pets, photographing flowers and pretties, and being in the garden.

My garden is my peace of mind. I lose myself with hands deep in the soil. Weeding, planting, tending. Me without a garden is a scary thought. Me without a camera in the garden, even scarier.

I don’t know quite what I did before blogging and finding folks I like to commune with online. Oh yeah, I quilted a lot. And made stuff with paper. Which I do a lot less of these days. Because here I am, on the computer.

And then the critters keep me pretty busy. It’s an animal house. They walk on me like I’m pavement. But yeah, loving them makes me a better person. More complete. As someone once said, “Until one loves an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened.” Amen to that. If I had oodles of money and some land, I’d want to take them all in. Make sure they were housed and fed and warm and loved.

You can find me either at the computer, or out in the garden, most any day of the week. Email me at: brendakula@suddenlink.net. I love to meet folks, find new sites, add new bloggers to my friendship roll. Pleased to meet ya, as we say around these here parts.

For those of you wondering if I’ve fallen off the face of the earth, no I haven’t. But some of you may recall my fall backwards over some piles of deck lumber nearly five weeks ago. Well, the injury to my left foot has continued to keep me out of the garden. So I haven’t posted much.

Those of you whose blogs I normally read, please try and understand how sad it’s been not feeling well enough to get outside and work in my sanctuary. So I haven’t been visiting many gardening blogs either. It is just hard to be faced with seeing such beauty when I can’t participate. Yeah, I guess that’s being a bad sport…

However, upon seeing a specialist yesterday, I now have a steel boot that goes up to my knee on my foot, which enables me to get around with less pain. I will have this on for three weeks, and then they will reevaluate.

Because I am virtually indoors most of the time, I am continuing to blog on my decorating/craft blog, http://cozylittlehouse.blogspot.com, because at least I can enjoy still taking photos while inside. So I may not post much on this blog until fall, when, hopefully, I will have the full use of my foot back. I was told it is a difficult injury to heal. But at least I’m not hobbling around leaning on a cane anymore. There is that!

So, to answer those who’ve emailed to ask about me, I do appreciate your kind concern. It meant a lot to me that you cared. Sorry I have been remiss in my gardening endeavors.

Dear Brenda, so sorry to hear how lousy you’ve been feeling. I can relate to the foot problem…my ankle is still swelling up when I walk on it and could take most of the summer to heal enough to ‘take a walk’. UGH. That does not make me very happy, either;-( I try to get out though, and walk around the garden, and I’ve managed to do a few things out there as well as inside. And I work around the house, so I am getting around…but I’m technically supposed to stay off it. The swelling wouldn’t be so bad if I did! I hope you can hurry up and get well so you can enjoy your garden once again! I’m dealing w/Lyme Disease so that’s another bummer. I guess this summer wasn’t meant for ‘fun in the sun’…because I can’t tolerate the sun due to the med’s I have to take. My skin blisters up even with SPF 100…I couldn’t believe it! Well, there are lots of other things worse than missing garden time (uh, at the moment I can’t think of any!)…but, I’ll let you know if I do!

I fell “down” the stairs while going up at my friends house a few weeks ago. My foot is still sore. It’s a tiny thing compared to what you are living with though. Get well!!

About that bright reddish orange dragon fly….they land on my hosta blooms all the time. Last summer I never investigated up close, for the longest time I thought they were flowers or buds. They are back again this summer around the pond. Gorgeous!

Since I mostly visit your decorating blog, I had almost forgotten about this gardening one. I just assumed you weren’t gardening so much because of the construction going on in your backyard & the hot humid Texas weather. I’m sorry to hear your foot is still giving you fits. I hope the new boot will help you get around better. It’s a royal pain to be gimpy. I know, I’ve done my time on more than one occasion. Getting old is a bitch! Excuse the french. Here’s to you feeling better & getting around better. And the dragonfly photo is amazing. I had to call my son over to take a look as he loves dragonflies. He thought it was amazing too. Take care & I’ll check up with you later on your decorating blog.

After seeing your photos I’m tempted to explore Canons more. You have such a beautiful garden and pets.

Sago Palm fronds in the early morning sunlight above.

Robert has brought in some lattice to build something to hide all these meters on my neighbor’s wall and on mine across the way. Being on the corner, I have both stuck to my wall. He’s thinking of covering the brick except for the part of the meters the company readers have to get into. Maybe I could grow vines or have shelves on it. This is what I’m thinking will be my “designated” living room area of the deck. This is the side just outside the east French doors.

This is it looking from the south angle. See how he finished out the area around my shrubs? I am liking that.

Yes, I know. I still have cable wires dangling from the roof. Hopefully this will get hidden soon.

This is the side facing the north. This would be my “designated” kitchen area. Maybe a gas grill, a table and chairs, etc.

My yard is still a complete mess. Things are all jammed up together.

He is busy the next few days on another job. But he thinks next week he will probably stain the deck. Let’s hope we manage to kill the tree roots with the Round Up he’s used!

We have another project for him inside the house. Then he will get to the gazebo plans before too long.

Here is what Robert is working on now. Isn’t this adornment around the tree pretty? It will give the trees room to grow and a place for me to plant. Yes, Charlie Ross is sneaking a peak.

I’m as surprised as anyone. I just let him build and see what’s going to happen next.

Of course now that we’re coming down the stretch, we’re pondering adding to the project…

See this area where the deck ends near the tools? Maybe extend the deck to build a gazebo?

A gazebo shaped in what I think is an octagon that Robert put around the trees? This is his thinking.

Oh yes, the tree we’ve been feverishly trying to kill. To eradicate the many shoots that have sprung up all over the yard…

I figured out what it was. Remember it was just in front of that building equipment. It was/is a black locust, and apparently hard to kill.

BIOLOGY & SPREAD

Black locust reproduces vigorously by root suckering and stump sprouting to form groves (or clones) of trees interconnected by a common fibrous root system. Physical damage to roots and stems increases suckering and sprouting, making control difficult. Black locust clones easily spread in quality and restorable natural areas. Although black locust produces abundant seeds, they seldom germinate.

MANAGEMENT OPTIONS

Mowing and burning are only effective in reducing the further spread of young shoots from a clone or parent tree. To kill a clone, cutting alone is ineffective. Herbicides applied to the stems or cut stumps spread into the root system and provide better control. From mid-June to August hand sprayer application of 6.25% glyphosate solution (15:1 water:glyphosate) to stumps cut near the ground has been used by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Region V State Parks Resource Management Office. Resprouting and suckering from dense clones may require follow up treatment after a few years*. *Because plants that appear to have been killed can resprout even several years after treatment with herbicide, annual monitoring should be conducted and follow-up treatments made as needed.

Anyone have experience with this horrid, despicable tree?

We have a gazebo which I call the pergola, plus a matching arbor down in the corner of the place, and I really like the fact that they reflect each other in terms of form. It gives the yard structure and makes the different areas relate to each other. So an octagonal gazebo would be perfect as it would reflect shapes already present in the deck.

Black locusts we don’t have, but honey locusts we do, and you should thank your lucky stars you don’t. They have to be the most well armored tree in the world, and just as difficult to kill as the black locust with tire potential tire damage for your tractors and other tools to boot.
